Bioshock 2 Review
The original Bioshock was a first person shooter that hung on a gruesome, but enthralling story. Set in the underwater ghost town of Rapture, the player battled monstrously mutated humans. Like its predecessor, Bioshock 2 is set in the same dark and atmospheric environment, and it continues its theme of discovering new and gory depths to human perversion. The first was so hugely successful as a commercial product and as a creative one, that it can be understood how its sequel comes up short.
What the first game managed to do so well was inundate the player with the sense of creeping horror while still arousing the players curiosity enough to compel him further and further into the mad underwater hell that was Rapture. The story was more than engaging, it was horrifyingly mesmerizing. The original story centred on a mad industrialist who creates a gorgeous underwater city to house an insane experiment that twists humanity into unspeakably evil demons. Unfortunately, by placing the sequel in the same setting, the story had natural limitations. Although the ultimate villain is now a diabolical feminine character, there is apparently less new content to be explored. Although the premise is quite different, there is a lacking sense of macabre discovery that the first conveyed so ably.
Instead of playing a human survivor trapped in Rapture, the player in the sequel will take on the role of Big Daddy, a tortured mutant endowed with some devastating weapons. Although it is initially satisfying to play a villain from the first game, the novelty is transient. There are some gaping holes in the logic of the story, that are never quite addressed and detract from the gaming experience. It is never explained how the Big Daddy unit acquires the ability to utilize the games pseudo-magic ability, plasmids. Furthermore, despite supposedly being a continuation of the first game, there is never enough integration of the two storylines to repair the narrative plot holes.
Although the story suffers in comparison, the same can not be said of the combat. By adopting a Big Daddy unit as the protagonist, Bioshock 2 can increase the variety of weapons and abilities available to the player. In addition to using the drill weapon native to Big Daddies, they can also utilize a vastly increased array of conventional weapons. Furthermore, plasmids are no longer mutually exclusive to weapons; players can now complement their shotgun blast with a simultaneous lightning blast. The combat itself is at least as engaging as in the original. Bioshock 2 also adds a multiplayer component with seven different scenarios.
Bioshock 2 has some big shoes to fill, and it isnt completely successful at doing so. For those gamers looking for the same eerie journey through the creation of a tortured, evil genius that the first provided, prepare for some disappointment. However, for those looking for a great game with a very good back story and thrilling, terrifying fights, this is the game for you.
